The drawing portrays a child mocked and rejected by society for who they are, and who, worn down by that rejection, sees their ego — represented by their reflection — turn into a monstrous version of themselves. The "monster" is set at eye level so that it also becomes the viewer's own reflection in the mirror, underscoring the fact that we all carry a version of ourselves that society has damaged in one way or another. Society itself is shown as a uniform mass of masks, forever judging others.
